The TSA on "Security"
Recently, an unencrypted laptop containing information about over 30,000 airline frequent flyers was stolen at San Francisco International Airport. The laptop was later recovered:
The laptop contained personal information on applicants to the program, including names, address and birth dates, and in some cases driver's license, passport or green card numbers, the company said.
Which led to this brilliant quote:
"It's not so much a security issue as a violation of personal information," said TSA spokesman Nico Melendez.
I'm not sure what the TSA's definition of "security" is, but it can encompass personal information as well. Sure, we're not giving away state secrets in that laptop, but knowing personal information about someone is a breach of their personal security. Lack of basic understanding in matters like this is the reason why the TSA is considered a joke by many people.
