Recent Comments and Font Updates

Just a couple of items of site news for our loyal reader(s).

I added a Recent Comments box in the sidebar on the right side of the screen. Hopefully we can actually get some discussions going... or we can be as lazy as we usually are.

I also hated the quote text we used to have. It was Palatino (or Palatino Linotype, if you had that one). Palatino looks like crap on Firefox for some reason. Georgia looks good and is newer (by roughly 45 years). It is designed for a screen display. Most importantly, I like it more. So we're using that now.

Messing with new stuff for our look

I put in some new theme-related stuff. Believe it or not, it actually shows up better on IE as well. (Not by design, trust me.)

What do you guys think of it so far? Any color preferences?

More CSS tweaks; note to IE users

More CSS tweaks, as you can see. The site looks a little better (pending a lot more tweaks to the rounded-corner stuff)... in Firefox and Opera, at least. Internet Explorer users might want to read this.

More site updates...

So, a few quick things I've been working on the past few nights when I've had a free 15-20 minutes. I added the author name at the bottom of the posts, as well as a link to the comments. Having some issues getting the right number of posts to display; I'll update that later. Images should generally be able to show up as much bigger now in image posts.

Okay, more stuff to come soon! I really gotta start hitting the css layouts some more.

New comments system

The built-in comments system for Chyrp kinda sucks if you start doing anti-spam checking, so I have moved to an easy and flexible new method - Disqus. You can sign up on their website and post comments on any site that uses Disqus. You can keep one single profile, manage all your comments in one place, and I can manage it pretty easily as well. More on this later, as I haven't had a lot of time to give it a whirl. Discussions will only be viewable in the Trackback links (it's below this post). I'll add the comment count stuff a little later when I get some time.

Comments and registration are enabled

I just enabled the comments system.  I also allowed people to register for the site.  How do you like it so far?

Why the change?

Mediocre Minds needed to change for a number of reasons. Most than anything, I just don't have time to maintain and code elaborate layouts. I wanted something quick and easy. Similarly, I don't have time to write articles like I used to. So it all came down to ease-of-use. Unfortunately, the previous site engine - Drupal - was just not easy to work with.

Having used Tumblr a little, I was quick to jump on Chyrp and take it for a test run. Since it seemed to be running okay, I went ahead and waited for a MySQL update on my server and here I am, running it a day later.

Along with the backend changes, I will also be changing the kinds of things I post. I might still write longish articles, but expect more links, quotes, and code talk. Mediocre Minds may be more personal than it used to be... more of a blog, really.

I have to see if I can get Binkley his access sometime too.

Codename: Carmen Sandiego

What the hell just happened here?

I'll tell you what. After three iterations of Mediocre Minds, it was time for the fourth. So here it is... Codename: Carmen Sandiego.

Now, let me warn you that I'm just trying out Chyrp, an interesting tumblog engine. I have no idea how much I'll like it... a lot of it depends on reliability and ease of use, the two most important things for me right now.

Expect shorter updates, but they will probably be more frequent as well.
