Introduction
We heard about Comic-Con 2002 in San Diego through one of our favorite sites, Penny Arcade. It seems that the Penny Arcaders (Arcadians? Arcad-ites?) were heading down to SD for the event. Well, I thought. We're in Los Angeles. It's a two, maybe three, hour drive down there. And we can always rely on my friend Viktor, who is going to blindly let four of us crash at his place in La Jolla for the weekend. The other eighteen-and-a-half personalities discussed this and concurred that this was, indeed, an excellent idea. The fact that Penny Arcade people were going to be there played no small part in our decision. Gabe, Tycho, and the gang have been our heroes for a while, because they run a website that manages to be funny and thoughtful without sacrificing its integrity. I think it's safe to say the one thing we all looked forward to the most was meeting them. Unfortunately, we had not pre-registered for the con, and could not do so this late, so we decided to wing it and just go buy tickets at the door. After our drive down on Friday afternoon (we could not make Thursday and Friday), we got to the convention hall at 5:57 pm, 3 minutes before they closed. So we managed to buy our tickets just in time for the weekend days. I would like to take a moment to thank Viktor for letting us stay at his place. To show my gratitude, I have made him Honorary Junior Intern at Mediocre Minds. I will NOT show my gratitude by giving him any amount of money, respect, or basic decency. After a night of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and some intense Virtua Tennis, we woke up at 7 am, got ourselves a nice breakfast at Denny's and hit the convention at 10 am. The convention was a draining, but thoroughly enjoyable experience (more of this in the Conclusion), and what follows is a detailed examination of the panels we attended and a broader overview of some of the trends and things we saw. Enjoy. - Sumir |
