great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

On a hot, stuffy August day in Oklahoma 1982, the wind came sweeping down the plain, and the waving wheat sure smelled sweet when the wind came right behind the rain, and somewhere over in the state of Nebraska, a little Andy Roddick was born. Little Andy picked up a tennis racket and began chopping away, whacking his brother hard with incredible swinging ability, enough to make him pass out and foam at the mouth.

Movies

Best Movies of the Year

300

12. 300
Easily the best comic film adaption to date, we can only hope Watchmen turns out as well.

11. Knocked Up

10. Live Free or Die Hard
Truly, an updated take on the Die Hard franchise, this film showed us that John McClane still has some life left in him. It'd be higher on the list if it didn't eventually derail into bombastic action sequences.

09. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

08. Grindhouse

Look what last year's March Madness did to Adam Morrison!

March Madness is the greatest few weeks in American sports. Sure, the players may not be pros, the games might not feature stellar shooting or defenses, and the teams may be wildly mismatched... all that doesn't take away from the sheer chaos that sweeps the college basketball circles for one month. From more games than anyone can humanly watch to wild upsets to desperate surges to unbelievable shots, there really is nothing else like March Madness.

Once again, we're holding a March Madness tournament bracket. This year, we're opening it up to all of you. Here is the information:

Provider: Yahoo! Fantasy Sports
League ID: 34782
Password: mmm999

Go sign up right away. Make sure you leave a comment here indicating who you are in the pool. Remember to make your picks after the seedings are revealed on Selection Sunday (March 11th). Your brackets are locked on March 15th.

Good luck to all, and feel free to speculate about who is going to win it all in the comments below!

Busy Reading TPS Reports

Dear UCLA Football Team,

We would like the USC Trojans to be in the BCS Championship Game. To this effect, we would like you to respect "the system" and let them win this Saturday. Please note that if you do not do so, you will be going against every media personality out the air, and you will also screw up our "system".

Thanks,

The BCS and University Presidents

It seems the players at UCLA didn't get the memo. I guess we were too busy reading TPS reports or something. I guess we were too busy caring about winning the game. You know, too busy working hard and showing up on the day of the game. Too busy not looking past our next opponent to our bowl game, mediocre as it might be. Sorry, guys. Our bad.

Andre Agassi

I didn’t grow up watching soccer, basketball, football, or baseball. I followed tennis. And over the years, I have developed interests in many other sports – to the point of temporarily abandoning my original love – but I have always come back to it. Two tennis players influenced me heavily as a youngster – the first was Pete Sampras and the other was Andre Agassi.

This past Sunday, at the US Open, Andre Agassi played his last competitive singles match. Watching him play his matches this year, I realized that perhaps he was the one who exerted more influence over me when I was younger.

Some people say that celebrities – rock stars, athletes, or movie actors – "saved their lives". I don’t think Agassi "saved" my life... but he definitely influenced it. It is quite normal to think of an athlete as a role model, much as they loathe having that label thrust upon them. Agassi was my role model when I was younger.

And why not? He was a brash, long-haired, rebellious talent. His wardrobe was an explosion of color. He had anger, drive, and the kind of rare skill that is forged by just those traits. In a clean-shaven, white t-shirt, quiet and dignified world of tennis, Agassi was the black sheep of the family. He was the John McEnroe of our generation. What teenager couldn’t like him? He was all my emotions rolled up into a fantastic tennis player.

With the the end of World Cup 2006, it's time to do a wrap-up of the pinnacle of fútbol.

  • England is pants. It's amazing they got as far as they did, given how poorly they played.
  • "Pants" is an awesome word. It's most definitely NOT pants. I'm making an active effort to start using it in my everyday conversations and writings.
  • No one told me this would turn into Euro 2006. I was rooting so hard for Germany to take it and then they fell flat against Italy (with all credit going to Italy).
  • I really couldn't care less about who actually won the final match. I can't find myself cheering for France (though I think Zidane is pretty cool) and Italy's style is unbearable to watch sometimes.
